Host Judith Jones reveals how our love affair with chocolate began. In Mesoamerica, Southern Mexico and Central America, people living in the tropical rain forests discovered the edible properties of Theobroma Cacao, referred to as the “food of the gods.” With fellow travelers from around the world, Judith discovers the popularity behind the pleasures of chocolate.
Today, chocolate has evolved into a booming industry, where almost fifty million people depend on cocoa for their livelihoods. We begin in the Ivory Coast, which produces over 70% of the world’s cocoa supplies.
Judith visits the Royal Botanic Gardens in London, where horticulturalist Lara Jewitt discusses the components of the cacao tree. In St. Lucia, Zoe Palmer visits the Fond Doux Cocoa Plantation to learn how to produce cocoa beans for export. Then Judith meets historian Sara Jayne-Stans, and discovers how, in the 16th century, the Spanish introduced the bitter chocolate drink of the Aztec nobility to Europe. She then meets with historian and broadcaster Dr Matthew Green, who conducts 17th and 18th-century Chocolate House tours in the heart of St. James Square, London.
